DIY Face Cleanser, Scrub and Facial Masks

DIY Face Cleanser, Scrub and Facial Masksfacial

This post is dedicated to my dearest and youngest sister Siri. With two kids and a busy job, she has managed to shed down a lot of extra weight just because of her sheer determination and will. I want to help her ( and ofcourse myself and dear readers) to stay beautiful with the things available in our kitchen.

The basic process –

1. Cleansing

2. Scrub / Exfoliation

3. Face Mask

I will try and divide the below DIY Facial stuff  into the above categories, so it is easy to know if we are repeating cleansing over and over ,without exfoliating the skin. Here we go Siri!

Step – 1. Cleansing

The purpose of cleansing is to remove the dirt from the skin. First, wash your face with water. Then, apply the cleanser in round circles on the face and wash it off. Pat dry. Usually, cleansers are just to get you face clean, so there is no need to keep them applied for longer periods of time. Do this everyday before going to bed. Usually, it is not recommended to wash your face more than 3 times a day.

This awesome page at wikihow illustrates 11 cleansers. However, I tried pinning pages earlier that did not achieve anything – so I list my 2 picks from this page to start off, and two more scouted from the world wide web.

>> Almond Cleanser

Grind 1/8th cup almonds and mix with 2 tbsp milk and 1 tea spoon lemon juice. Use this paste to cleanse your skin and wash it.

>>Tomato Citrus Cleanser

Mix 1 ripe tomato, 2 table spoon milk and 2 table spoons of citrus juice (lemon, sweet lime, orange). Blend into a smooth paste. Use this paste to cleanse your skin and wash it. This mixture remains well for a week in refrigerator.

>> Honey Lemon Cleanser

Mix honey and lemon in 70:30 ratios. Add few drops of water to dilute if necessary. Take a few drops and massage the face gently.  Leave the mixture on face for 5 minutes and remove it later with warm towel.  When stored in an air tight container, the mixture stays well for a week in refrigerator.

And one more..

>> Olive Oil :

Olive oil and nothing else. It is known to be one of the best natural cleansers around. Take a few drops of olive oil and massage the face gently. Leave the oil on the face for 5 minutes and remove it later with warm towel.

Step – 2: Exfoliating / Scrub

The purpose of exfoliating is to remove the oldest dead skin cells that cling to skin’s outermost surface. It is a big debate on whether to exfoliate on a dry face or wet face – however, I personally think that it’s better to do it on a wet face as the process of exfoliation itself makes the skin dry.

Exfoliation is done usually twice a week, after the cleansing is done.  Adjust according to your skin type.  As mentioned in this tutorial, below are the steps to exfoliate your face –

  1. Start by rubbing it in small swirling circles across your cheeks, chin, around your nose, your upper lip and forehead. Continue doing this for at least 60 seconds but try for 3 minutes if you have the discipline.
  2. Flatten out your hands and press the palms against your face while drawing big circles across your cheeks, chin and forehead. You only have to do this for 20 seconds or so. Re-wet your hands and do this again.

Now, time for some home made scrubs for exfoliation –

>> Oatmeal Cleansing Face Scrub :  Mix 1 table spoon  each of oatmeal, honey and yogurt into a smooth paste.Using clean finger tips, rub the mixture in a circular motion, starting with your chin to your forehead. Wash off after 2 minutes.

>> Banana Scrub :  Take a ripe banana,  add ground sugar and one table spoon honey. Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>>  Lemon and Sea Salt Scrub :  Mix  1 tbsp of lemon juice and 1 tbsp of sea salt.  Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>> Brown Sugar Scrub :  Mix 1 table spoon brown sugar and 1 tea spoon olive oil with few drops of honey.  Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>> Strawberry, Oats and Lime Juice Scrub :  Mix 2-3 ripe strawberry, 2 tbsp oatmeal and 1/2 tsp lemon juice. Mash them well. Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>> Orange Peel Honey Facial Scrub: Get the orange peel powder available in the market. Mix one 1tbsp of orange peel powder with 1 tsp honey and make a paste. Gently massage and let it sit for few minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>> Apple Facial Scrub:  Peel the skin of apple, remove the seeds and blend to a smooth paste.  Add 1 tsp honey, 2 tbsp powdered oats and make a thick paste. Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

>> Sandalwood Gramflour Scrub :  Mix 1 tbsp pure sandalwood powder and 1 tbsp gram flour with some raw milk to make a smooth paste. Gently massage for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

Now, one last exfoliator for hands and legs. You can  quickly use this during shower time –

>> Lemon exfoliator : Take one lime and slice into half. Hold both the halves in your hands and dip into powdered sugar. Leave it on your hands and feet for around five minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water to reveal smooth skin.

This page has some more Indian style scrub recipes, if you need more variety.

Step -3 : Facial Mask

The purpose of facial mask is to give all the nourishment the skin needs.  Typical usage is to apply the face mask and keep it for 10-15 minutes until it dries up. And then, clean it with luke warm water.

So, here we go –

>> Avacado Face Mask :  Mix  equal quantities of mashed avacado and oats powder. Apply and keep it until dry.

>>  Strawberry Face Mask : Mix 1 ripe strawberry, 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp yogurt. Apply and keep it until dry.

>> Banana Face Mask : Mix 1 overly ripe banana, 1 tsp orange juice and 1 tsp yogurt. Apply and keep until dry.

>> Cucumber Aloe Vera Face Mask : Mix 1/2 cucumber, 1 tbsp aloe vera pulp and 1/2 tsp lemon juice. Apply and keep until dry.

>>  Besan Face Mask :  Mix besan, sandalwood powder, turmeric and rose  water into a paste.  Apply and keep until dry.

>>  Besan Honey Face Mask :  Mix besan and warm honey.  Regular application will help reduce pimples.

>> Besan Yogurt Face Mask :  Make a thick. paste  of besan and yogurt.  Works well for oily skinned.

>> Yogurt Oatmeal Face Mask :  Add 1 tbsp yogurt and 1/2 tbsp oat meal. Apply and keep until dry.

One extra tip for my dear readers –

To get rid of extra facial hair, make a thick paste by mixing turmeric, water, gram flour and few drops of mustard oil. Let it dry on face for 5 minutes and rub this turmeric paste slowly to pull away the facial hairs. Remember you have to gently scrub off this homemade facial remover in opposite direction. Turmeric mask will remove thin and light hairs without causing irritation or redness on face.

Hope these home made cleansers, scrubs and facial masks help you to kick start your home beauty regimen. Now, the only stopping factor is – YOU! 🙂

Have a good day and keep rocking!!
